The Avowal by Denise Levertov

I remember so well the day I learned to float on my back in what is a small fountain, maybe two feet deep, at my school. It was during summer day camp, and I was four.

I hope you get to float on cool water under warm summer sunshine.

The Avowal by Denise Levertov

As swimmers dare
to lie face to the sky
and water bears them,
as hawks rest upon air
and air sustains them,
so would I learn to attain
freefall, and float
into Creator Spirit’s deep embrace,
knowing no effort earns
that all-surrounding grace.
